Anabolic steroids, or anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), are synthetic (man-made) derivatives of the male sex hormone testosterone. They are designed to increase muscle mass ("anabolic" effects) and enhance male characteristics ("androgenic" effects). While they have legitimate, prescription-only medical uses, they are frequently misused by athletes, bodybuilders, and others to improve performance or physical appearance.
